Just make sure OpenOffice.org is running in daemon mode on port 8100. It won't index every file. There's certain types which cannot be indexed by OpenOffice.org.

The instructions for getting the OpenOffice daemon running can be found here:

This very .. it does the Doc conversion to HTML .... however it only indexes the file on access .. in other words ... if I access the file only then does it get index so I can search for the contents...

is there a way to make this automatic ?

On upload it should be indexed.  Is this not the case?

Okay, after playing with this for a couple of days it appears you have to install OO from the OO website (even if on Linux) and install everything in the bundle including the JRE.  This was the only way I could get it to work with the newer versions of OO.
